Over 20 years of working experience as transcriptionist

Welcome to The Transcriptionists’ Profiles, a series of interviews with people who are working as transcriptionists. My name is Archie, the author/administrator of Transcription Blog.

In this article, I will feature my interview with Pam Williams.

To start, can you please tell me your current designation or level as a transcriptionist? (e.g. senior MT)? What is your location? Where are you presently connected?

Pam Williams: Senior/SC/SC

Archie: How long have you been working as a transcriptionist? How did you start in this profession? What are the factors that prompted you to pursue a career in this field?

Pam Williams: Over 20 yrs/took classes/work at home, being my own boss, more money

Archie: Which do you prefer: to work home based or in an office setting? Please explain briefly.

Pam Williams: Home, flexibility, save on gas, don’t have to dress up to go to work.

Archie: Which among these transcription work most appeal to your interest: Medical, General (Business, podcasts, interviews), or Legal Transcription.

Pam Williams: Medical

Archie: What, for you, is the most important characteristic or quality to become an effective and productive transcriptionist?

Pam Williams: Macros for speed

Archie: Being a seasoned transcriptionist, what do you think is the best advice you can give to people who are interested to enter this field?

Pam Williams: Not to bother, as VR came in with EMR and is taking our jobs. We are now editors instead of MTs and the pay is definitely not in this field anymore. I now am teaching a machine how to take my job, and pay was cut approximately $600-700 per week. How degrading!

Archie: Thank you for your time.
