Which is easier to transcribe; medical transcription or general transcription?

For a novice in this kind of job, it would be easier to transcribe general transcription than that of medical transcription.

There are a number of reasons why many choose general transcription over medical transcription. Some are not flexible to work in both medical and general transcription.

Why Not Medical Transcription?

First, in medical transcription, a transcriptionist shall need adequate knowledge or skills in medical terminologies to be able to transcribe well an audio or a video. Fitted for this are the medical students or graduate of medical courses such as nurses, nursing aide, doctors, therapist, caregivers and medical assistants.

A transcriptionist that is not familiar with the medical terminologies will have difficulties in transcribing. That’s why there are centers or schools nowadays that trains transcriptionist to familiarize in all medical terminologies. There are also online courses for transcription. Second, in medical transcription, there are doctors with foreign accents who can be difficult to understand. While in general transcription the terminologies are typically easier to learn and understand than medical terminologies.

Why General Transcription?

General transcription includes but is not limited to business transcription, academic transcription, insurance transcription, legal transcription, and sermon transcription. Though both need typing ability to type quickly and accurately it is not the only component of transcription work.

General transcription requires skill and talent beyond typing. Apparently, you have to know how to spell and punctuate. Although it’s not necessary to have an English degree, having a good grasp of the English language is required as well as having a very strong vocabulary.

Listening skills are also required. There is a difference between hearing and listening. Listening comprehends. You need to be able to comprehend the material in order to use the context to transcribe it accurately. It is also required to always proofread your work. This is how we can understand the transcription job and differences of medical and general transcription.
