Why Voice Recognition Software is Not Advisable for Transcription

First of all, as what we comprehend regarding about voice recognition software or speech recognition as what others would refer to, is that it’s a software used to translate spoken words into text.

It has its advantages and as well as disadvantages. And the disadvantages are the reasons why it is not advisable for transcription. Also, Voice recognition uses a lot of memory. The software has specific hardware requirements.

Nearly all people cannot type as fast as they talk. In assumption, voice recognition software faster creates a transcript faster on a computer. However, this may not at all times be the case because of the proofreading and editing required after dictating a report to the computer.

Even though voice recognition software may read between the lines of your spoken words appropriately the majority of the time, the transcriptionist still needs to make corrections. Naturally, it recognizes not more than 20% words the wrong way.

It cannot recognize spoken words that are not pre-defined or installed to the software. Additionally, the software may not recognize words such as medical terminologies or jargons and even uncommon names of persons until you add them to the program’s collection of words.

Using voice recognition software, you may find yourself modulating your voice to better capture your tones than in normal talk. It is recommended if the microphone is near to the user’s mouth.

More remote microphones will tend to have more errors. In a noisy environment, voice recognition software may be unsuccessful to identify your voice, and may even try to produce text from voices captured in the background. The louder the sound or some other persons talking in the room, the greater a number of errors will be.

The user has to teach voice recognition software after installing it. The teaching process includes reading several words aloud and in various intonations. The software detects your voice to a certain language and automatically adjusts for your meticulous tone of voice.

However, a few people with extraordinary or particularly thick accents may not be able to attain the required accuracy maintained by some voice recognition programs. When users talk about different speed, what the voice recognition program will create an inaccurate and cluttered transcript.

For most transcription, voice recognition software is not advisable. For transcriptionists alone, they’d rather use software to help them transcribe audio recordings.

It’s because they can learn a lot from all the things that they have worked on. In doing transcription, transcriptionists can improve their listening and typing skills gaining a lot of additional information.
