These three can be the basis whether a transcriptionist may or may not be able to work on transcription jobs in any field of expertise.
1. First, one has to have average or above average typing speed. You must be able to type fast and of course making sure you do it accurately with minimal errors as well.
2. Second, you should also have the good hearing ability. If you take a medical transcription training program, you will be required to have a hearing acuity test before you could get in. Having good hearing ability comes in handy when you want to become a successful transcriptionist.
3. Finally, knowledge; if you never heard of it, you can’t transcribe it. If you will start medical transcription, there can be words you have never even encountered before, but there is nothing that we can’t learn. If we encounter a word that we don’t know, then we check the previous edited reports and once you review the report, you get familiarized with the words and once you hear it again, you already know what to do. Familiarization really is the key.
These three things go hand in hand, one cannot go and say “I’m a good transcriptionist because I can type fast.” You have to be able to hear and know what you are transcribing. Also, even if you can hear well and can’t type fast enough, you won’t be able to be a productive member of the company.
Of course, knowledge, having a background in the different fields in transcription helps but it doesn’t have to be exclusive for all concerns; it doesn’t mean you have to be in the medical field to work as a medical transcriptionist and people from the legal field exclusive only for legal transcription.
Some are flexible not even related working as a medical transcriptionist and doing well.Transcription needs to have the speed for productivity and the good hearing ability for accuracy as well as knowledge in the particular field.
Since we are continuously learning, any transcriptionist whether one from the medical field or other professions you can take up any transcription field like in the business field as long as you have the drive to do what you love.
Nurses, for instance, may start doing transcription. Some may find it exciting and fun, it stimulates your brain when you get a difficultly-heard dictator. This may push you harder just to get that word you barely understand.
Indeed, a medical transcriptionist can work for business transcription files
