Important Role of Transcriptionist to IP-Relay

It is important to have an accurate transcription. The main objective of transcription is to come up with an electronic copy of the voice file. The transcript may or may not be in exact words, but the accuracy should be maintained in such a way that it follows the style guide given by the client.

Transcription is not a literary piece that is formulated using a transcriber’s creativeness but it should represent the idea and thought of the speaker who wants to have a copy of it electronically.

Why is it important to transcribe 99% accurately?

Let us take for example the use of IP-Relay for deaf people. IP-Relay or also called Telecommunications Relay Service is a US government-funded telephone service project intended for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech disabled.

The service in part uses transcription to help a deaf person. This is how it works: The deaf person will type their message out on the computer screen; the operator will then relay the words verbatim to the hearing person.

Then the operator will type the hearing person’s response for the deaf person to read. With that previous company, the only criteria being measured for quality assessment is accurate.

All conversations should be captured 100% verbatim including spelling and grammar in order for us to keep the job. The more challenging part of it is that we have to type what a live person is saying and not a recording.

It is therefore important to capture everything accurately so as not to change what is being conveyed by the other person. One single word added or omitted can change the meaning of the whole conversation.

Every pause, punctuation marks, and plural or singular words matter so much in a transcription job. The spelling, of course, is also significant since it measures the quality of the work being delivered.
