It’s a whole package of a lot of things. A good transcriptionist/QA has to have tons of energy for this job coz one has to be on the toes all the time, intact nerves, friendly to the machine(that is computers), a medical background gives an upper edge especially when it comes to medical transcription plus a special interest/passion for transcription, and a lot of helping tools in the form of drug index, dictionaries, etc. the tools would, of course, vary for medical transcription, legal transcription, etc….
Julia:
A good medical transcriptionist treats each report like it is his/her own. She/he remembers that behind the words and paper is a person so he/she does the best job she/he can. She/he realizes that mistakes in a report can and do cost lives. She/he also has to love what he/she does. If she/he doesn’t love it, she/he won’t be in it for long. Confidentiality is absolute. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, as well as medical terminology, are not just a plus, it is necessary. You cannot be a good medical transcriptionist without it. She also has tools and knows how to use them. She knows what to do when a problem arises.
