Five Ways to Improve your Transcription Skills

Whether we are new graduates or veterans in the transcription industry, we still have this craving to improve in our transcription skills. This is either due to the call of duty or because of our sheer passion for the transcription industry.

In summary, these are five of the ways we can improve on our transcription skills, develop liking for the job a particular client offers – even if we do not seem to like it, develop liking for the line or field a client is into to increase our interest in their field, review the specifications of our clients every morning before transcription work, compare and merge our works with the perfect files after every shift to review our errors as our rest, and then listen to the files again in order to sharpen our listening skills.

Like the Files of the Client

Why would develop a liking for the job a particular client offers this be important? Ever wonder how we perform a certain activity if we lack the interest for it, for example, washing dishes? We do the job, but afterward, onlookers are not satisfied with the result. This is because our heart is not that into it. Similarly, if we would like the kinds of files our clients provide us, we would be better able to transcribe the files.

Like the Field of the Client

Developing a liking for the line or field a client is into is related to what was discussed earlier. If we would also research on the background of our client, we will be able to maintain a good working relationship with them and understand why they dictate such kinds of files. We now would be better able to see our role as transcriptionists in this manner.

Review Regularly the Client’s Specifications

Even if we seem to know our client specs by heart, reviewing them every morning would still be an advantage. Why? If we have lots of clients to serve, and each of them has a different set of specifications to be met, reviewing the specifications before transcription will not only improve our transcription skill but also improve our accuracy as well.

Compare and Merge Our Files

We might already have an above 90% accuracy as trainees, but we will like to improve. Compare and merging our works with the perfect files after every shift is not only a perfect habit to develop but also a good way to unwind or slow down a busy day. It provides us the opportunity to see the areas we still need to improve and see if we have already improved our listening skills and in our transcription accuracy. It will be good to remember that an increase in accuracy would mean an increase in our natural transcription speed due to mastery of the client’s dictation style.

Listen to the Files Again

Last but not the least, listening to the files again will be worth doing. It will not only enhance our listening skills but also increase our appreciation for the dictations.

These are only five of the ways a transcriptionist may improve. It can actually be a workflow we can implement ourselves – familiarizing ourselves with our clients, reviewing the specifications, actual transcription, then compare and merging our files with the perfect ones and then listening to it again.

With the help of good-hearted teammates also to support us on the way, before we know it, we had already improved on our transcription skills!
