Welcome to The Transcriptionists’ Profiles, a series of interviews with people who are working as transcriptionists. In this article, I will feature my interview with Julie.
To start, can you please tell me your current designation or level as a transcriptionist? (e.g. senior MT)? What is your location? Where are you presently connected?
Julie: I worked as a transcriber in Cyber City Phil. Inc – Clark, Pampanga, Philippines and was promoted for QC. I lived in Mabalacat, Pampanga. As of now I’m looking for a part time home based job but was hired for a 1 week home based project by a Canadian employer.
How long have you been working as a transcriptionist? How did you start in this profession? What are the factors that prompted you to pursue a career in this field?
Julie: 2 years. I started the year 2009 and enjoyed working as a transcriber because it helps me to be more accurate in typing and to use the English language. I’ve been pursuing this as a profession. Because it is an easy job as long as you have a good grasp of the English language and good typing skills and hearing.
Which do you prefer: to work home based or in an office setting? Please explain briefly
Julie: Home based, because I’ll be my own boss and no need to dress up or hurry up in going to work.
Which among these transcription work most appeal to your interest: Medical, General (Business, podcasts, interviews), or Legal Transcription.
Julie: General
What, for you, is the most important characteristic or quality to become an effective and productive transcriptionist?
Julie: A transcriber must be good in English, can type fast but accurate and good listening skills. But most important is PATIENCE because sometimes there is some bad audio and still you need to transcribe it.
Being a seasoned transcriptionist, what do you think is the best advice you can give to people who are interested to enter this field?
Julie: Practice your listening skills especially the accent of each country, to learn the accent is very important because other countries don’t speak the English language very well.
