How A Medical Technology Graduate Can Work as a Transcriptionist?

It has been said that medical technology is the best foundation if a student plans on pursuing medicine. This was what I held on to when I took the course of medical technology.

As I proceed in life and landed on a medical transcription training several months after I graduated, I then learned that medical technology is not just the best foundation for Medicine but for medical transcription as well.

Medical transcription entails transcribing or converting the recorded medical files into text words and saving them as a document. It warrants a very good background on medical terminologies, medicines, procedures, and even medical slangs or shortcuts. As a medical technologist, I believe it is my background that helped me go through medical transcription training easily.

However, there still are a lot of factors to consider if one decides to pursue medical transcription. Given that most of the clients are based in the United States and of different races, you have to put slang pronunciation or accent into consideration.

This is where good hearing ability comes in and this is something that we learn even from the big universities. However, I do believe that a medical technologist’s background in terminologies makes this easier.

If one is not familiar with medical terms, he/she will have a harder time understanding what a slang dictator is saying. However, if one is familiar with medical terms, he/she has a good grasp of the terms being commonly used by doctors and there would be higher chances of getting the words right.

I may not have studied medical technology to be a transcriptionist but I have found passion in transcribing medical files. It allows me the great opportunity to be in a field that I love even right at the comfort of my own home as I take care of my family as well.
