5 Useful Tips to Budding Writers

Writing is indeed an enjoyable task, which relaxes and soothes the mind and nourishes the soul. However, it does take a lot of efforts, dedication, patience, and perseverance to excel in this field and provide genuinely, quality and appreciative writing, no matter what the domain is all about.

While each writer does evolve, sustain and perpetuate his or her own style of writing, a few tips could indeed be offered that could be of some use to budding writers. These tips need not be taken as the Gospel Truth but could be applied as and when required and necessary.

1. Good reading is the key to good writing.
Indeed, good readers make better writers just as good listeners make finer speakers. This author believes that a writer is essentially what he reads, since his thought processes and its crystallization into printed words which are gained through what he reads and imbibes.

2. Write with the reader in mind.
It is important that readers should be able to understand and appreciate what is being written, and this should be presented in a model that is simple and free of avoidable jargon. While many technical subjects like engineering and health sciences need to offer subjective jargon, it is necessary to use this as sparingly as possible. What is important is that an average reader should enjoy the reading and not be bored or disinterested in the writing. Reading should be more by choice and less by compulsion.

3. Know and understand one’s writing limits and act accordingly.
A budding writer is not expected to be a master of the writing game and it would indeed be an exercise in extreme insanity if he thought him so. Writing professionals, like all other professional skills on the face of this earth, does possess limitations and deficits which need to be corrected over time and due diligent practice. It is important for a budding writer to initially write well within one’s limits and to gradually improve their skills and competencies with each writing outing. It is indeed necessary to offer to restrain, patience and perseverance and build on one’s strengths and competencies, innate and acquired.

4. Always seek to raise the bar of performance.
A naturally gifted writer may gain recognition, approbation, and esteem from his very first work itself. But this is no reason to rest on one’s laurels and not improve. It is not only professionally necessarily that he remains humble and self-effacing, if possible, but also needs to work harder to better his skills. Like all other arts, writing too needs constant practice to remain sustainable and progressive, and for this, it is also important that writers discipline themselves well in their professions, caring more about the outcomes of their deliberations rather than unrelated subjective matters.

5. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Similarly, how readers react and respond to writings is very crucial and important since they are the final decision makers. It is necessary that writings should convey the deepest and innermost feelings experienced by the writer, which, when relayed through his shared works, are also capable of endlessly enthralling his readership, young and old and be a source of perennial delight.

In summary, these five tips to budding writers are just some of the many that can be followed. When done religiously, you can become a successful writer soon.
